THE NATIONAL ROUND OF THE PHILIP C. JESSUP INTERNATIONAL LAW MOOT COURT COMPETITION WAS HELD AT THE RA CONSTITUTIONAL COURT
On January 28, 2024, the national round of the PHILIP C. JESSUP INTERNATIONAL LAW MOOT COURT COMPETITION was held at the Constitutional Court. Three universities applied to participate in the Competition - Yerevan State University, Russian-Armenian University, and French University in Armenia, and the teams of Yerevan State University and Russian-Armenian University made it to the finals. This year the topic of the Competition related to the main issues of human rights and the institution of citizenship.
Within the framework of the moot competition, a number of international legal issues become the subject of comprehensive discussion. The students engage in the research and judicial presentation of these issues and gain a deeper understanding of international public law, as well as develop practical skills.
The event was organized by the Center for International and Comparative Law. Siranush Sahakyan, Aram Aramyan, and Levon Gevorgyan acted as the judges of the Competition, chaired by the Representative of the Republic of Armenia on International Legal Matters Yeghishe Kirakosyan.
This year, the team of Yerevan State University won the national round of the Competition and will represent Armenia at the international competition in Washington.
The competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice (ICJ). It is named after Philip Jessup, who once served on the ICJ, and is organized by the International Law Students Association (ILSA). The moot, under the leadership of Stephen Schwebel (who also wrote the inaugural moot problem), started as a friendly advocacy competition between two teams from Harvard University in 1960. The first champions were declared in 1963 and the competition opened its doors to non-American teams in 1968.
Armenia has been participating in this competition since 2000, and since 2015 it has been held in Armenia in English, which requires participants to have full command of the language.
The international round in Washington will be held from March 30 to April 6, with participants from more than 60 countries.
