JUSTICE VAHE GRIGORYAN HOSTED ALBIE SACHS, FORMER JUSTICE OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT OF THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA, HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDER
On 5 September 2022, Justice of the Constitutional Court Vahe Grigoryan hosted Albie Sachs, former Justice of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of South Africa, prominent human rights defender, writer, and publicist, who paid a private visit to the Republic of Armenia.
Welcoming the guest, Vahe Grigoryan extended his gratitude to Justice Sachs for the visit and his interest in Armenia’s High Court, emphasizing the importance of such informal ties aimed at the exchange of the best practices in the field of constitutional justice. Justice Grigoryan noted that Justice Sach’s prolific yet dangerous struggle for democracy, human freedom, and dignity back in his homeland, as well as his judicial interpretations in regard to the constitutional provisions on political freedoms of individuals, have been a source of inspiration for many human rights advocates and judges beyond the Republic of South Africa. In his turn, Justice Sachs expressed gratitude for the warm reception and provided high appreciation, noting that it is a great honor to be in Armenia and to be hosted at the Republic’s High Court.
In the course of the meeting, Justices Vahe Grigoryan and Albie Sachs referred to the contemporary developments and challenges in the field of protection of constitutional democracy and ensuring the rule of law, as well as they exchanged views on a number of issues related to the interaction of national high courts and international organizations in the respective field.
